what color leather would look good on a Black horse?

all her tack is black, bridle, reins, saddle and Stirrup Irons. i think she looks great in black, she is a black horse so what color leather would look good on her? i would like a Leather Halter for shows and i am getting my senior pics taken next summer/fall so i've got some time to find the right one. no nasty answers please and if you can please post a picture/link of the halter! thanks!

The Take-Off In Show Jumping Explained

Bromley Davenport's words in his Dream of the old Meltonian are very apt when describing the take-off of a horse in show jumping. The quotation, "With your muscular quarters beneath you collected," describes a state of affairs eminently desirable at the take-off. The rider has made arrangements for the horse to commence his jump from the spot best suited for the fence in question, and must now ensure that he does not interfere with the drive from the hind legs into the air, but, in fact, assist by preserving balance.

Loss of rhythm and coordination now may well adversely affect the parabola it is hoped the horse will describe. So it is important that the rider move his weight forward smoothly without displacement of the lower leg; that his fingers and hands, being supple and separated sufficiently to allow of instantaneous independent action, keep an even feeling on the horse's mouth, following the natural movement of the head and neck; and that he looks forward along his chosen route for the next approach phase, which is not far away.

When a horse is taking off well, its forelegs are bent up from the knee, and the hocks, having come well under him, are, with great power, propelling him into the air. The rider is comfortable, is looking well forward, and is giving complete freedom to the back and loins. His hands are ideally placed for independent action if required, and are moving slightly back to retain an even feeling on the horse's mouth. There is no interference with the horse's natural movement, and the general impression is one of workmanlike efficiency.

There is a school of thought whose contention is that a distinct increase in feeling on the mouth, amounting at times to a definite pull, should be exerted as the hind legs come to the ground for the last time before the take-off, with the object of helping the forehand into the air. For some types of fence, notably those of parallel variety, it is, without doubt, beneficial. There are, however, dangers to it.

One, for instance, is that the horse may well take off when it is the rider's intention to shorten stride close to the fence. In some cases the pull acts on the rider, bringing his leg to a standing position with the stirrup-iron as pivot, and drawing his hands back against his ribs, where they cannot act lightly or independently. The jump will be jerky and unharmonious, with a real danger of loss of balance on landing.

In the final stages of take off, the horse gives final propulsion from the near hind leg. His forelegs are well tucked up, and he is beginning to stretch his head and neck out to gain distance, and to help the hind quarters up. The rider is well with his horse, and is master of the situation. His hands are separated, ready to give all the rein required. If, perhaps, showing a little rigidity at the knee, he is nevertheless nicely balanced, and his position shows ease and fluency. His concentration on things to come is very apparent.

When final propulsion has been completed all but the near hind toe has left the ground. The head and neck are stretching out, and the forelegs are folded up as close as the body allows. The rider's weight distribution is assisting the horse's effort, and the hands conform to the outward and downward movement of the head. Note that, from the horse's mouth to the rider's hip, the rein, arm, and body should form practically a straight line. This is the completion of a beautifully controlled and elegant jump.

The Proper Way to Clean Your Horse During the Spring Months

The warmer spring temperatures are right around the corner and with them come the ritual of spring baths for your horses. While you may not be excited about this undertaking, I'm sure your horses can't wait. You see during the winter a horse can become a bit dirty and grubby. This is especially true for a horse turned out and one that hasn't done much in the way of riding or grooming. A good cleaning will be a welcome treat.

In my opinion, the best places to begin are the horse's mane and tail. Start by spraying on a detangler. Allow it to dry before attempting to pull out any burrs from its tail and long mane. I like to pick each burr out by hand while also trying to untangle any knots you find before even attempting to use a comb. Next using a currycomb, give the horse a first-class grooming to loosen up any dried mud or ground in dirt. I've found that using a stiff brush and then a soft brush works great.

Once you've successfully removed all the excess dirt, you can now give the horse a good bath. Wait for a nice, warm and sunny day. This way both you and the horse can enjoy yourselves. Also, a bath causes most of natural water repelling oils from the coat are removed which can be harmful to the horse's health if it rains. If you cannot avoid the rain after the bathing process, use a Waterproof Horse blanket before turning it out. After a little while, the horse's natural waterproofing oils will return. After rinsing all the shampoo completely off the horse, find a clean towel and dry the horse off as much as possible. You'll want to get the detangler out again and spray down the mane and tail once more.

After the washing, get a wide toothed plastic comb and gently comb the horse's mane. It is ok to use your fingers to pick out any bad tangles you come across. Cutting the tangles out may sound easier but all you'll end up doing is making a huge mess out of the poor horse's mane which can take months to grow out completely. Once you've got all the tangles undone, you can now put the mane at the desired length.

Some Horse Owners believe that the tail of a horse should never be combed. If you do decide to comb the tail, use a soft brush and begin at the bottom, working your way. Loosen up any tangle with your fingers and brush out a few hairs at a time.

Tack It Right! Don't Horse Around While Tacking For English Style Riding

To tack up a horse means getting it ready for the ride by putting on the Saddle Pad, saddle and bridle. Equipping the horse with the right tack and ensuring the comfort of the horse by tacking correctly is imperative to ensure your safety and comfort in the English Riding style.

English Horse riding is different than Western Riding style. Although the tack (horse riding and maintenance equipment) used might appear similar to a novice, an experienced equestrian knows better. Both styles use tacks such as saddle, saddle pads, stirrups, bridles, reins and more, but on a closer look you could find a major difference in the tacks – from size to functionality. However, the correct tacking of Your Horse is crucial in both English and Western styles.

To tack up a horse prior to riding it casually or for competitions means to get the horse ready for the ride by dressing it with the tack equipment. English riding tack typically consists of Saddle Blanket, a saddle, bridle, girth, bit, reins, martingale and so on. The saddle for English riding is smaller and lighter than the Western one, however, each saddle types has further designs specific for particular sports and activities. Also, in English riding, you are in direct contact with the horse's mouth using the reins. The reins are also held by both hands (one rein in each hand) and used as an aid, just like the seat and the legs are used to control the speed and direction of the horse.

Since, there are more factors and coordination required while riding English style, equipping the horse with the right tack and ensuring the comfort of the horse by tacking correctly is imperative to your ride. Experts often prescribe a step-wise procedure while tacking for English riding. Here's a list:

* First, tie the horse before you start.
* The next step is to groom the horse, either where the tack will be placed or you can also do a full grooming and ensure the horse is clean and fit. Remember to pick the hoofs as well.
* After you've groomed the horse, put the saddle pad first, the horse's withers is the correct spot.
* Then place the saddle on the addle pad (right in the middle). Here, it is important to ensure that the girth is strapped not too loosely or tightly. If it is too tight, you will make the horse uncomfortable. A correct way of putting the saddle is from the left side.
* Now you can put on the boots or Polo Wraps , if necessary.
* You can now undo the cross ties and put the reins over the horse's neck.
* Take the bit and put it in the horse's mouth, be gentle and careful with your fingers while doing this, avoid hitting the teeth and warm the bit in cold weathers. If the horse is shy to the bit, you can apply honey or peppermint oil etc. to it.
* Then slide the bridle's crown gently over the horse's ear.
* Do the throat latch and the chinstrap, buckle it loose enough to fit four fingers between the horse's throat and the latch, the chinstrap should be buckled with a finger or two's space in between.

It is recommended that you do not tack a horse alone if you are doing it for the first time. Watch an experienced equestrian do it, and assist him/her from time to time so that you can get used to treating the horse in the right way. For best approach and results, you can take lessons from a qualified instructor, this way you can learn everything from tacking to riding to grooming and maintaining the horse and stable. Also, ensure that you use the right tack and wear appropriate equestrian apparel for English style riding, and treat the horse with love and care.

Blanket Size

Is it okay if my horses is 2 inches smaller than his normal blanket size?

Ooops,I ment to say 'Is it okay if my horse's new blanket is 2 inches smaller than his normal blanket size?' Sorry.

It should be okay as long as you can adjust it to fit by tightening up the straps. If the straps are too long, you should have them shortened by a tailor. If the chest closure can't close tight enough, you need a smaller blanket.

EDIT: Lol, that changes things. You're going to find that he's going to get blanket rubs (when his movement rubs the blanket on his fur, it makes the fur shorter, and can even rub it down to bare skin and even cause sores). If you can extend the straps far enough so that the blanket still fits around the shoulders and covers his butt, it should be fine. You don't want to restrict his movement, because that can get him hurt in the field (as can a blanket that's too big).

Tips When Choosing Blankets

Decorating one’s home, especially if you’ve just moved in to a new house, should be fun and exciting.  This is your chance to choose colors, designs, and brands of furniture, beddings, and other household items to compliment the ambience of your home.  Of course, you don’t want to forget the importance of health and budgeting, so this article is going to teach you how to choose a particular household necessity for the bedroom, namely blankets.

Choosing blankets to buy for the bedroom can actually be quite confusing, especially if you’re very particular with the materials being used and the sizes needed for each bed.  You have tons of online and offline stores selling all kinds of blankets and all kinds of brands, so choosing one can take hours, maybe even days, till you’re satisfied with your purchase.  Here are a few tips on how to choose blankets with regards to the materials being used and the different kinds of blankets according to size and function.

  • Blankets made with synthetic fibers, on the other hand, prioritize warmth and are much cheaper as compared to those made naturally.  The only downside to this type is that they lack breathability and can be uncomfortable during hotter seasons.  Popular examples of synthetic fiber blankets include acrylic, fleece, and vellux blankets.  Acrylic blankets are especially cheaper than natural fiber blankets plus they provide warmth, are soft to the touch, and are hypo-allergenic.
  • Choosing a blanket also means checking out the type of construction or weave of the blanket.  This has to do with the warmth and insulation the blanket provides to the user.  There are two types of blankets based on weaving: thermal and conventional. 
    • Thermal blankets usually are woven loosely as compared to conventional blankets in order to allow air to circulate.  These are best for people who do not need so much warmth during sleep.  It is made with acrylic and cotton fibers.

Choosing the best Numnahs for horse riding

Numnahs provides horse with protection from shock and chaffing, in addition to providing the riders the comfort. Most British made numnahs are made of layers of wool to ensure comfort while allowing the air to pass the wool. They are cut in the shape of a saddle and are designed to fit the saddle well. Good quality saddlepads are essential for the comfort of the horse and help in getting the best output. The right fit of the saddle is especially important in an event like horse racing where the comfort of the horse plays an important part in the outcome of the race or the joy of simply riding. Not only this, in horse racing the weight carried by the horse is minimized and the numnahs are designed accordingly.

British made numnahs are available in a variety of colors. Neutral colors are often used for Show Jumping and dressage events whereas brighter colors are seen more frequently during cross-country events and team events. There are many online stores which sell well-crafted and high quality numnahs and saddlepads online. These stores offer made-to-order services. In fact, for that extra bit of style, you can even have your numnahs embroidered. These stores have a large variety of numnahs.

There are certain things which you need to check before choosing from British made numnahs for your racing horses. First of all, the numnahs and saddlepads should be of the right shape for the saddle flap and should fit the saddle properly. The size of the numnah and the saddle should match. It is always best to choose a numnah that can be cleaned easily. Nowadays, you can find numnahs that can even be machine washed!

How do you put a Nevada twist in a stirrup leather?

......this isn't just shaping the stirrup/fender leather.....it is putting a twist in the strap part down by the stirrup somehow.

horse tack Number 1-How To Size Your Halter

Horse tack is the technical term for all the saddles, bridles, blankets, bits and other stuff you place on Your Horse. This will be a fundamental overview of typically used tack, and how to appropriately size it for your horse.

As a new or inexperienced Horse Owner, it will be superb to have information like this ahead of you spend money on anything for your equine friend. If you were to obtain the wrong gear or incorrect size, you could do a lot of harm to your self, your horse, and your pocket book!
