Jatropha curcas: The Green Gold?

Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd recently signed an agreement with the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd to undertake Jatropha plantation over 50,000 hectares of land in the districts of Jhansi and Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh. The company said that alternate fuel sources will have to be exploited to meet the growing fuel demands of India in particular and the world at large.

Jatropha, or the wonder weed as it is popularly called, shot into prominence some 7-8 years back for its astounding abilities to survive drought conditions, thrive on acrid land and yet yield amazing quantities of fuel that could be put to use without any processing.

It wasn't long before a mad rush to buy waste lands across the world broke out.

The search for an alternate fuel has strengthened in the last few years amidst growing concerns based on the rapidly drying up conventional sources of energy. Various experiments are underway around the world to find an alternative for the time when we would have exhausted all fossil fuels.Nuclear fuels, hydrogen, nitrogen, even water has not been spared the machinations of discerning scientists in their search for the alternative to coal, oil and gas that could power the technologies of tomorrow.Jatropha weed is one such probable source of fuel that has gained popularity over the last few years. On hindsight, its rise to popularity is natural, given that fuel from the weed might easily Turn Out to be the cheapest to produce.

What is Jatropha?

Jatropha curcas is a poisonous scrub weed belonging to the euphorbia family and is believed to have originated in Central America. It is touted as a bioenergy crop that grows in marginal, eroded land, and is resistant to drought. Hence, it is not expected to compete for land that could grow the more important food crops. Another factor adding to its popularity is that itdoesn't require a lot of water or fertilizers and pesticides, quite unlike corn, oilseed rape, soybean, sunflower and other food crops that are usuallydiverted into biofuel production.

Jatropha is a non-food plant, which is believed to start producing seeds within 12 monthsof planting, with maximum productivity level achieved in 4-5 years. According to research, the plant remains useful for around 35-50 years and its seeds can produce around 37% oil content. Its kernels can produce up to 60% oil content. The plant is said to produce up to 12-20 tonnes of oil per hectare. Add to it the fact that it considerably reduces polluting emissions and one can rightfully assume to have landed a formula to make green gold. Here is a plant that promises boundless oil supplies to drought-ridden countries.

Jatropha and India

Not unnaturally then, one can consider Jatropha to be a blessing in green coating to the hundreds of farmers saddled with several hundred hectares of arid, semi-arid and non-arable lands. Taking cognizance of the fact, in 2003, India's Planning Commission recommended a national mission on biofuel, a two-phase project for wide-spread cultivation of Jatropha on wasteland across much of India.

The committee on development of BIO-FUEL presented its report that recommends a major multi-dimensional programme to replace 20% of India's diesel consumption. One of the objectives was to blend petro-diesel with a planned 13 million tonne of bio-diesel by 2013, produced mainly from non-edible Jatropha oil, a smaller part from Pongomia. For this end, eleven millions hectares of presently unused lands are to be cultivated with Jatropha.

Jatropha curcas is considered most suitable for thissince it uses lands which are largely unproductive for the time being and are located in poverty-stricken and watershed areas and degraded forests. Jatropha is also planned to be planted under the poverty alleviation programmes that deal with land improvements.

Additionally, scientists at Central Salt and Marine Chemical Research Institute (CSMCRI) at Bhavnagarrecently discovered a microbe from Indian waters that can manufacture bio-degradable plastic using a by-product of theJatropha plant. CSMCRI has said that it successfully made bio-degradable plastic from glycerol, a side-stream product of Jatropha found during the process of bio-diesel extraction from the plant's fruit.

Jatropha Fever

Indiais not alone in the research to tap most effectively into the potential of this rather versatile plant. China, Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Belgium and Italy are some of the other countries involved in Jatropha research. China, which claimed to have 2 million hectares of Jatropha already under cultivation, has plans to plant an additional 11 million hectares across its southern states by 2010. Neighbouring Myanmar (Burma) has plans to plant several million hectares; and the Philippines, as well as several African countries, have initiated large scale plantations of their own.

As per reports, the total land under cultivation for Jatropha was estimated to shoot up to 21 million hectare in 2014 from over 720,000 hectare in 2008 with an achievable total potential of around 30 million hectares.

D1 Oils, a UK-based biodiesel producer and the world's largest commercial Jatropha cultivator is responsible for around 81,000 hectares of Jatropha plantation in Chhattisgarh and in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, with plans for an additional 350,000 hectares over the next few years.

According to media reports, some of the best-known business houses, including India's largest private sector company Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), is the race for planting this green gold in the South Asian country. The company plans to set up the country's first biodiesel refinery in Andhra Pradesh at a cost of around Rs. 700 crore. (Source: Media Reports)

How fruitful is this quest?

However, all that glitters is not gold. And all that is said about Jatropha is not an established fact.Against the popular belief to the contrary, Jatropha does need rain, fertilizing andample amount oftime to come to fruition. It takes about 4-5 years for a plant to mature. Jatropha needs at least 600mm of rain a year to thrive. Even though the plant is touted to survive drought, it does not have any correlation to the eventual yield.

Jatropha, just like any other plant, needs to be cared for, quiteunlike the belief that it can be planted and left to grow. Similarly, fertilizing or adding manure is essential to maintain good long-term seed yields. The fact that Jatropha plants can survive droughts does not mean they will not be more productive if they get more water. However, the optimum amount of water required is still unknown. The early experiences from the cultivation of Jatropha as a managed agricultural crop have pointed that although Jatropha can indeed survive hostile environmental conditions, oil yields can be much higher in conditions where the plant has adequate access to soil nutrients and water.

According to the Discipline Coordinator for Discipline of Wasteland Research at Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar, Dr. Jitendra Chikara, "The yield from the plant is very uncertain. We are researching the ways to improve the yield and productivity of the Jatropha plant". 

Additionally, the yield of the plant has been widely hyped. However, the facts point to a different direction. Dr. Chikara says "The per-hectare yield for Jatropha stands at about 2 tonnes against 12-20 tonnes claimed by various sources."

Being still in the research mode, Jatropha is not a cheap crop to plant either. The cost of planting the weed comes to about Rs. 20,000 per hectare.

It has also been excessively advertised that the oil pressed from the crop can directly be used sans any processing. This however, may lead to damaging the engine of a vehicle running on this fuel, says Dr. Chikara.

Jatropha is neithera leguminous plant nor onethat can fix the eroded nitrogen content in the poor soils like legumes. Hence, it is only fair to believe that it would need some nitrogen inputs in the form of fertilizers in order to maintain good longer-term yields, considering regular harvesting of the seeds withdraws nitrogen from the plants.

The road ahead

Jatropha may seem like the most sustainable option among bioenergy crops, however, it still has to prove its potential. There are many uncertainties over the potential of jatropha as a biodiesel crop, including its unpredictable yield, the conditions for its optimum growth and the potential impacts of large-scale cultivation. There exists an obvious need for further research in this area before we can expect assured yields from Jatropha as well as the techniques needed to achieve them on a large scale.

Though, Jatropha does have a future, it is going to take sometime before it can live up to all the claims that have been made on its behalf, for which its genetics will need to be better developed. Only further studies will tell if the Jatropha is indeed green gold or fool's gold.

Can a police officer arrest you without a hat/helmet?

My brother said a police officer can't arrest someone if they aren't wearing a hat/helmet, because they aren't in full uniform.
Is this true or a myth?

It's a myth that has risen from the wording of some legislation.

The wording of many police powers, like giving a breath specimen, state that they can only be requested by a police officer in uniform, however, in the legislation, uniform is defined as clothing that identifies them as an officer, it does not mention specific items of clothing which must be worn.

horse Back Riding hints and tips for winter?

What are some ways to maintain my riding ability over the winter. I do not ride as much due to the weather and I would like to keep my muscles in tune.

Try to find different ways of keeping fit: Going to the gym, going on runs or even doing small exercises around the house. It's important to keep riding even in the winter because you may get unfit and so will Your Horse. Perhaps do more schooling instead of hacking out or even standing in the middle of an arena all wrapped up whilst lunging your horse is good!
To try to generally improve your riding, vary what you do; Work without stirrups or even going with a group and having a lesson on awareness of others. Focus on one thing you want to improve for example posture and then keep trying different things: No Stirrups, bringing your knees to the pommel of the saddle, working on inside bend and if moving hands is a problem, try holding cups of water in your hands to try and keep still, if its about keeping in your seat, stick a £5 under your bum and try to keep it there throughout canter. Basically make it fun and interesting but still educational!

Before you can actually take into account the bike you have to decide what to wear, with the big selection of clothing open to help keep you warm it could be difficult to choose so now is a variety of my favourites.

[20/12/2010 17:13:20] John Morgan: After a few bad reviews from the likes of Bike Radar, I had been sceptical of riding the Moda Presto Mountain Bike, but simply because it was shiny and brimming with first class kit I just now couldn't resist. Taking it around the lake I stumbled upon several problems mostly regarding the ascents and descents making me feel slightly nervous in comparison to my Felt but I stayed with it, around the flat parts of the lake is the place the Presto shone through offering amazingly high spec for a bike under £1000 it flew over small bumps using the Reba SL Fork absorbing most of the vibrations.

Towards the end with the 25 mile course I wasn't obsessed about the Presto (I enjoy my Felt too much to care bout another bike) however it has still impressed me a lot more than almost every other full suspension bike within the £1000 cost range, mostly because every other full susser in this price structure is a sack of crap filled up with poor quality components or well recognized brands "value models" however the Presto has some of the best kit available (in addition to the rear shock).

After all where else could you get the blend of American Classic MTB 26 Disc wheels having a full Shimano XT drivetrain along with a Reba SL Team Fork for just £1000, you could possibly might find these under that price if you searched online for weeks but thats not precisely what the Presto is, its a whole bike offering amazing components as well as a frame and all additional bits and bobs you have to construct a bike.

The most severe scenario sceanrio is the fact that you buy this bike take it for just a ride and absolutely hate it, you can strip it down throw everything onto a superior performance frame such as a Cove Handjob and you'd result in an amazing hardtail for a super good deal, plus you can actually ebay the shock.

My recommendation would be to grab one of them because at this price they will not be around for long.

trail riders vs racers?

dont you find it funny that people think they are crash hot bike riders but quickly find that on an actual race track in an actual race they are really slow i know it happened to me i thought that id do better in my first race but i ended up getting lapped haha but after a few races i began to pick up and came into the race pace

Very true. The amount of people I have meet doing track days, who in the riders briefing, they are not listening to the instructors advice etc.

They think they can walk on water, because they once maxed out a Fireblade on the ring road.

Stick them on a track day and they beat by a 15 year old school boy, running his new 125 RS engine in !!

The Diesel Racer! Nissan Sunny

Nissan India is coming with the huge-hands of savouries with its creation Nissan Sunny. Officially the launching date is not yet declared but it's expected to be fallen into the early months of the year 2012. For a while, the company has marked its brand name in the list of World's Outstanding Automakers with the consecutive launches of its ultimate creations. For now, another creation Nissan Micra with 76PS 1.2L DOHC 12-V technology based engine is on the racing track which is too getting tremendous response.

In today's competitive scenario the price tag makes big difference. The Indian consumer is in the habit of comparison of price tags while getting hold of any of the car and most of them put this issue on the front-end. Considering this key issue, the makers of Nissan Sunny has stapled it with reasonable price tag but they have not yet declared. With all cues it would expected to be in the class of Rs 7 lakh.

Globally, some of the dramatic variations have been made within the short period of time. Hourly fluctuation in fuel prices has somewhat bound automakers to innovate highly fuel efficient automobiles. So to gear Nissan Sunny on the longer run, Nissan India has decided it to introduce with diesel arm-set. With all tectonics it will be on the battle-front soon and strive to overturn its withstanders – Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna, Mahindra-Renault Logan, Maruti Swift Dzire, Tata Indigo Manza and upcoming Toyota Etios.

To make Nissan Sunny hard-bitten contestant the finest engineering has been laboring over to turn its mechanism next-to-best. They have optimized it with 1.5L dCi Powerhouse so that it can perform onto its best with first-rate fuel consumption. It will borrow the oilburner from Renault Logan which is already getting great response from its enjoyers. horse Riding Gold D of E Expedition Pyrenees 2009

During 2008/9 five young people from West Berkshire decided that the Pyrenees would be a great adventure for this award; after all we had done Bronze in Berkshire, Silver in the Brecon Beacons, all on horseback, it seemed logical that the next step would be abroad.  Where do we start?

Fortunately our leader, Carolyn was keen to see the venture through and with her encouragement we were able to source a riding centre in the Pyrenees with the help and guidance of Emma Getliffe at Have Horse Will Travel and Pierre and Carol Enoff in Porta, that would enable us to hire horses and be self-sufficient.

Eventually after many months of preparation and emails flying back between us and Emma, on 4th August 2009, with expedition food packed, we embarked on what was to become an amazing experience in France, Spain and Andorra.

We left Heathrow airport at 7.10am on Tuesday on a flight to Barcelona; we were somewhat surprised when two of our leaders left us for an upgrade into First Class courtesy of British Airways! On arrival in 40° C in Barcelona, all our careful plans were thrown out of the window when it transpired that the route to Porta had to be changed due to engineering works on the rail network. However, we arrived at 7pm at La Pastorale to be greeted by the owners Pierre and Carol, somewhat tired and hot.

The following day was changed and we were asked to start our expedition after lunch. After a familiarisation ride in the local area we packed our horses and set off on the first leg of our four- day expedition – from Porta to La Tour de Carol. This should have been a straightforward start to the expedition and Pierre was keen that we should make good time to the first camp site. However, according to our route cards we should take between 6-7 hours, which left an hour or so to sort horses out at the beginning and end of the day. We eventually found the correct place in about 8 hours. Pierre and our leaders met us at the camp site and camped with us.

The second leg of our trip took us into some spectacular scenery from Latour de Carol to a wild camp site near Girul. Our navigation began to become more confident as we got used to the Spanish 1:50,000 maps with no grid lines. We were able to have some great canters on fantastic shoe-less and bit-less horses. At our second campsite we again camped wild and were getting into the swing of things, managing to cook, get tents up and get the horses sorted before the inevitable thunder storm.

The third day turned out to be a bit of an epic! We left Girul and made good time into Meranges and then into Eller, despite taking a slightly different route to the original planned one. Unfortunately, we did make a navigational error when leaving Eller and followed an incorrect GR route! We then had to correct our error and retrace our steps back to Eller! On arrival back at Eller we knew we had at least another four hours of riding before our next camp site and to make matters worse the usual thunder storm arrived early. At 1700m being in a thunderstorm can be quite frightening, particularly Pyrenean ones! However, we were in good spirits, particularly when Mike, our assessor said that he would keep us company for the remainder of the day. Five hours later, after hail stones the size of marbles had rained down on us, lightning that seemed very close at times we arrived very relieved and extremely wet at our third camp site near Viliella. Although, we could be penalised in the award for what happened next at the camp site, there are some things that help to build relationships between different nationalities and far outweigh the rules of an award.  It was on this occasion that barriers between our group and another group of young people, who were being guided on the same route by another leader, began to come down. The French young people felt really sorry for us having being caught out in the storm, that they helped put our tents up for us, made hot chocolate for us on our arrival and took our horses off us to put them to bed. It made the day seem really special and we had a fantastic evening with them.

Day 4 dawned brightly and we were keen to be off on the final leg of our journey. We had packed up by 8am and were in the saddle by 8.15am for the last 20km, which would take us up to the col between France, Spain and France at Portella Blanca D’Andorra. Mike decided that he needed to get fit for Mont Blanc and decided to walk with us – we soon left him behind! The views were spectacular and our route finding was spot on. We were surprised when we began to be followed by what we thought was a wild horse! Unbeknown to us one of the French young people was poorly, so went back with Pierre, and his horse had followed us. We were delighted to see Carolyn and Jan walking into meet us as we headed back to Porta just in time for the afternoon thunderstorm again!

What have we gained from this expedition?

There are so many things that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. During the expedition we learnt so many things; our navigation improved, we learnt self reliance, team work, sorting out problems – navigation is difficult from a horse, you can’t all crowd around the map to seek agreement. We have learnt that there is more than one way to look after a horse. Pierre is passionate about the way his horses are treated; they don’t have shoes, yet they are able to cope with terrain that is rugged. They don’t have bits in their bridles, yet they are easy to control and have soft mouths. Our horizons have been broadened; we have seen new countries and new wildlife – the eagles soaring overhead was amazing.

i have a horse that is really head shy about bringing a chain around her head what should i do?

i recently discoverd that my horse is really head shy about brining chains around her face we were trying to give her her deworming medacation and she wouldnt take it so we put a chain on her but she was really head shy about it and made it worse what should i do o and she is nervous when u wave your arms around her

dont take any notice of the first answer!. Most horses are afraid of something. You CAN train them out of it by rubbing the chain over the horses body and giving it treats at the same time to help it feel relaxed.
and just keep repeating this until you can place the chain over the horses head! Good luck!

What do you do for a Horse Dog?

Otherwise, if you could find a suitable black Leather Saddle, you can buy silver sets that you add to your saddle. That is what my cousin did to her Show Saddle. It is really pretty, and has lasted several years of showing and about 8 months of everyday riding.
