Why The Riding Hats Of Today Are So Highly Recommended
Whenever we travel we take a risk of some kind, that's just part of life. As such, horse riding is quite a dangerous activity and we have to understand this. We don't need to be blasé about the risks but we do need to understand that 50,000 people a year are sent to hospital following some incident when they are horse riding. It's difficult to understand why some people choose not to wear riding hats, just ignoring the risks attached to being on horseback.
It seems unfortunate that many people are more concerned about how they look when riding, than their safety. If they wear a hat at all, they might select it on the basis of its aesthetic appeal, rather than its level of protection. They seem to be especially concerned that they do not look as cool as they could and might even choose not to wear a riding hat, according to this criterion.
When tests showed back in 2003 that a lot of horse riding hats did not offer the level of protection that they should, according to the British Equestrian Federation, efforts were made to improve and upgrade. Today, there are two distinctive safety standards in the UK for riding hats. More and more jurisdictions are insisting that young people wear riding hats when on horseback and there is a lot more awareness surrounding safety issues.
When buying a riding hat, look for a reputable manufacturer, something in Good Condition made to the highest safety standards and acceptable for any form of competition. You need to look for BSEN 1384 and PAS015 and should also be sure that the BSI Kite Mark is present. This shows that the hat in question enjoys ongoing quality control tests, specific to random batches.
As a result of all these standards and marks, you can be sure that the product you are purchasing is closely monitored and reviewed for effectiveness in relation to its shock absorbency, retention and potential penetration.
You surely don't need a picture to be painted to give you an idea of what could happen to you if you should fall off the horse, or otherwise receive an injury to your head as a result of horse riding. In many cases it is as a result of people who have gone before you, who have been less than fortunate when it comes to sustaining injury, that the riding hats today are manufactured and regulated so well.
Don't consider for a minute how you "look" when you are wearing your riding hat, as safety overrides everything else. Be very selective when you choose your riding hat, to make sure it fits correctly, that it will not move around when you shake your head vigorously from side to side. Do not drop it or otherwise damage it, or lend it to anybody else. Treat your safety as a priority and you will have a much better chance of enjoying many a pleasurable year of horse riding!
