Collars, leashes, leads, flexi-leashes?
What is your preference on collars and leashes for your dogs? And your opinion on the flexi-leash.
Ein has a slip collar for walking, and a 6 ft leash. Dafne is rockin' a purple nylon collar, with a matching 4 ft leash. I hate those stupid flexi-leashes, they do nothing for the dog, and allows irresponsible owners to let their untrained dogs run rampant while still technically having a leash on them.
I forgot to add in harnesses. I have one for the little dog, but it encourages pulling, so I don't use them. I'm a fan of the slip collar and the normal nylon, but I'm not sure when to start using a slip on my 5 mo. lab.
I use the slip collar on my little dog solely for corrections. My dog is well behaved, but can still be a little dog at times, and it just makes sure. Both my dogs walk loose leash, I spent many days training Ein to walk loose leash. Dafne didn't take too long. She figured out that when she pulls, I stop, so she can't keep walking.
I recommend only flat quick relase collars for larger dogs and harness for small dogs (due to trachea issues).
If you start training your dog to walk on a loose leash (so the leash is as an emergency cord only), your dog will be aware of where you are at all times and the need for leashes will be minimal.
For dogs that have reactivity issues, I recommend the head collars (Gentle leaders etc) only as temporary training tools to teach new leash behaviors and self control around the thing they react to. Then wean then off it.
I don't like flexis at all. There is constant tension on the collar or harness and the dog learns to get dragged around. Even when in locked position, the long this rope gets caught around everything (people, dogs, trees) and most people are unware enough they can't control it. The handles are awkward and make controlling a dog difficult as well.
If owners insist on using a collar to train a dog using the chain sound as a warning, I suggest a Martindale Collar Set so that at its tightest fit, it is the same fit as a flat collar (so the dog does not get choked) but the owner can still get the benefit of the chain warning sound.
I avoid slip collars as they can easily choke a dog (even without meaning to) and too many owners leave them on all the time (leaving the dog open to being choked if it gets caught on a stick etc).
