The number of horses for sale has grown in size, largely due to economic slow down. Owners simply cannot afford to keep these expensive animals. Many horses end up in shelters simply because their owners can no longer afford to keep them. Even high-priced and well-trained show horses are selling for a small amount of what they used to sell for.

Horses in every breed, and trained for any riding style, can easily be found. Price levels vary widely as well. Individuals must still be very cautious when purchasing this type of animal. It is an investment of sorts. Numerous issues should be considered during the decision process. In addition, many different sales sources are available to assist the buyer in finding the right horse.

A potential buyer should decide specifically what he or she intends to use the horse for. This streamlines the purchase process, making it easier to select the right animal. Most horses cannot be utilized for all purposes, simply because they lack the training. Their body type may only be suited for specific uses. For example, a draft horse would not be effective at herding cattle. A thoroughbred racehorse fresh from the race track would not make a good child's horse.

Most of these sites reach a worldwide pool of buyers and sellers. Most sites allow the seller to upload photos, which really helps the buyer narrow down the list of possible candidates for purchase. This is an excellent way to find horses quickly, do preliminary research on just what is available, as well as determine corresponding price ranges.

Other more conventional methods include contacting breeders or trainers, or talking to breed associations. There is an association for almost every breed in existence. Individual sellers still advertise in conventional classified advertisements, especially if these ads are in horse magazines. The value of x-rays is somewhat controversial, however. Some believe x-rays are necessary to verify whether a horse has a developing lameness issue. Others do not think x-rays provide any value. They are believed to erroneously indicate a problem when none exist.

Thorough research is recommended before making a purchase. Multiple resources should be utilized in the search process. A large selection of information and resources is available. A search is usually more expansive when looking for animals needed for the most competitive activities.

Two Stall Barn Plans To Pamper Your horses

There is nothing better than owning a couple of horses to get back the feel of the frontier days. Moreover, if you stay in the countryside, this can be a great means of transport over trails without proper roads, too. Or else, you can use them for plain pleasure riding. Whatever purpose you may use your two horses for, it is very important that you build a two stall barn for them. If you build it yourself with the help of plans, you can make it exactly according to your tastes and requirements and save on the cost too.

Structure and Components

A two stall barn built with the help of plans can be either big or small according to your requirements. It usually consists of two stalls, a Tack Room, wash room, sprinkler system, and an overhead area for storing hay. Proper lighting and heating as well as ventilation should also be provided.

Stalls

Horse stalls are usually rectangular in shape, and are built near the entrance of the barn. This ensures proper ventilation. Due to its position near the entrance, proper sunlight is also ensured.

Let us now take a look at the components of the stalls in a two stall barn built with the help of plans. Each of them includes a front, two slatted sides which are open for facilitating ventilation, and a swinging door with a good latch. Though they can be built of either metal or wood, wood is preferred. This is because it is easier to work with. The wood you choose should be tough and solid, as it has to withstand the punishment which the horse is sure to subject it to. This includes kicking, chewing and leaning on it.

The horse stalls can be built either free standing, or you can use a wall of the barn for a side. You have to ensure that they are comfortable for the horses. For average sized horses, the measurements should be five feet wide, eight feet long and six feet high. You can choose the measurements for your construction according to your needs from the plans.

Materials and Tools

It is best to keep all the materials and tools ready before you start the actual construction of your two stall barn. Your plans would give a detailed description of these, which can be got easily. This will avoid unnecessary running around after starting the work.

Check Local Building Codes

Before you begin construction you should check out the local building codes. There are areas which do not allow horses in residential areas. Some housing associations prohibit the addition of permanent structures to your property. By checking the local building codes, you can find out if any of these apply to you, and avoid problems. You would require your plans to get any necessary permits for construction.

Location

The area you choose for building your two stall barn with the help of plans should be elevated. This will prevent flooding. The area should also be dry, so as to prevent warping.

Flooring

Rubber mats form one of the best flooring for this construction, or for any Horse Barn for that matter. This is because they are easy on the horses' feet, and are easy to clean. This also keeps the horses healthier.

The History of Horse Racing in the United Kingdom

The ancient world of the Greeks began todays horse racing sport. Then, the Romans became obsessed with this horse racing sport, and like many other events in the history toke it to the next level. To help horse racing gain natural popularity the Greeks back in history incorporated this great game in the Olympics.

The importation of Arabian stallions into the United Kingdom during and after the Crusades began the origin of the game of horse racing in England. The combination of Middle Eastern stock and the European breeding led to the emergence of a swift runner with a steady build of horses.

The nobles and royal families in the course of Europe’s horse racing history where this sport was dedicated primarily to them. The commoners served as only spectators at this game.

As history states, Charles II and Queen Anne was so obsessed with horse racing that they had private and public horse racing competitions held through their own initiatives.

The development of various horse racing arenas throughout the land was much later in Europe. Although, Professional Horse racing started during the 16th century with the establishment of the great classics.

Europe had established the first governing body for horse racing and accomplished various things concerning horse racing before America has got its American Jockey Club.

The movement initiated by the elite of horse racing established the Jockey Club of England, and became the overseer of racetracks, races, standards for horse breeds, and event rules and regulations. During the 1750s they formalized the sport as we know of horse racing today. The early determination of breeding lines of the horses was the result by the Jockey Club. An official of the Jockey Club, James Weather was the first to distinguish the founding sires of the stallions, Thoroughbreds is what we call them today.

Throughout the development of horse racing, various types were formed, and are referred to as the classics. Some of most popular classics are St. Leger that was founded during 1776, the Oaks which was founded three years later, the Derby was produced the following year, 2,000 Guineas in 1809 and 1000 Guineas that was created five years later.

With the formation of the Jockey Club all these and other events were created through the Jockey Club.

St. Leger, a former Irish soldier Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger founded the St. Leger, and on September 24, 1776, the very first event under this category was held. Among the English Classics it had the longest distance but was canceled during the Civil War.

The Derby, during 1779 Edward Smith Stanley who was the Earl of Derby and devised this horse racing event who intended to race only among his friends over 1 ½ miles. The race has become successful that the following year saw the second race of its kind, and was named after his estate, Oaks.

These are only two of the most famous English Classics. Central to all these is that despite the presence of horse racing among other cultures, Europe is still credited for being the proponent for the 1st formal exhibition of horse racing.

A horse Of Their Own - The Pony Of The Americas - For Young Riders Only

The Pony of the Americas, more commonly referred to as the POA, is a popular and growing breed that was designed as a mount especially for young riders who were too big for a small pony but not ready for a full-sized horse. The small size of the POA makes it easy for parents to match a child to the proper pony. The Pony of the Americas is a distinctive pony breed that looks more like a Small Horse and possessing the attractive coloration of the Appaloosa. Their quiet disposition and gentle nature make them highly competitive in all equine disciplines. It is a rugged, athletic pony with the speed for games and jumping; strength for driving small carts; and the intelligence and patience for showmanship and equitation.

Les Boomhower, of Mason City, Iowa, was a Shetland pony breeder and an attorney with his own practice and in 1954 one of his neighbors offered him an Arabian/Appaloosa mare who had been bred to a Shetland stallion that was due to foal in the spring. Les waited until the foal was born before he bought the mare. The resulting colt born was white with what looked like black paint smears all over his little body. What intrigued the lawyer the most were the spots on the colt's flank that formed a definite black hand, which was the basis for the colt's name, Black Hand.

Mr. Boomhower had an idea to provide a pony breed between 44" and 52" tall that would be good for children to ride and show and that had the beautiful head of an Arab; a body muscled for speed like the Quarter Horse; and coloring distinguishable as an Appaloosa from a distance of 40 feet along with good stamina. He invited his Shetland breeder friends to his Memory Lane Ranch to discuss the idea and that was when the Pony of the Americas Club (POAC) was born. Mr. Boomhower's expertise in the law set up a solid foundation for the new breed registry of this distinguished pony's off-spring. As the foundation stallion for the Pony of the Americas breed, his colt was given the first registration number and is now known as Black Hand #1.

Among the breeds influencing the original POA were the Arab, Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, Welsh Pony, and Shetland Pony. In1963, the height limit of the breed increased to between 46 inches and 54 inches and the Shetland started being phased out of the POA breeding program. Larger ponies such as the Welsh and small horses such as the wild Mustang and the Arabian were combined with Indian ponies, Quarter Horses and Appaloosas to achieve a "little horse" look rather than the pony look of the Shetland. In 1986 the upper height limit of the breed was again increased, this time to 56". Today, the Pony of the Americas is created by crossing registered POAS; by crossing a registered POA with a registered horse or pony of an approved breed (see POAC for list); or, by crossing a registered POA with a grade horse or pony that has been identified with the POAC as being acceptable for breeding purposes. By 1996, the POAC had over 45,000 registered ponies.

The Pony of the Americas Club, Inc is now an international organization that it is the only equine breed organization devoted to youth riders. From the original Club came more than 40 POA state clubs and chapters throughout the United States and Canada that offer, state shows, regional shows and sales, a world class international show and sale and a world championship show in addition to Play Days and other events year round. The age limit of a child showing a POA changed from age 16 in 1954 to age 18 in 1973 and in 1987, age19 and over riding classes were added with a limitation that the POA under saddle is to be only 2, 3, and 4 year olds in training. Since the shows are designed around youths, adults are limited to showing the animals only in halter or pleasure driving classes. However, this makes the breed a pony for the whole family.

The Pony of the Americas should show style and substance, beauty and symmetry, being a balanced individual regardless of size and correct in all aspects of conformation, exhibiting approved color patterns and characteristics. At maturity, the POA is between 12 and 15 hands inches in height at the withers and typically weighs 750 to 950 pounds.

In addition to the refined head with dished, Arab-like nose showing mottled skin about the nostrils and lips, the Pony of the Americas has expressive eyes and fine ears. The chest is deep and broad, the back is short and the shoulders are sloping. The quarters are substantial, and the legs should have ample bone. The POA is a strong, fast, and durable pony capable of performing a wide variety of tasks.

The POA is most commonly recognized by their variety of colorful coat patterns that are similar to Appaloosas, from blankets to leopard spots; mostly white over their loins and hips with dark, egg-shaped spots, although the spots may vary in size from specks to spots four inches in diameter. Spots may be dark in the middle with a lighter ring surrounding it, called a halo. White over the hips without dark spots is known as snow-capped. Ponies that have white hairs mixed in with the base coat color are said to be roan. Ponies with Paint, pinto or albino parentage or markings cannot be registered.

The POA also has other distinctive characteristics such as mottled skin; white sclera around the eyes; and vertical black-and-white striped hooves in the absence of white leg markings. It is possible a POA will not have any striping on its hooves, so for this reason, the other characteristics of mottled skin and white sclera are the primary ones to look for in identifying the POA. The mottled or parti-colored skin is a unique trait found in the Appaloosa and POA and therefore it is a basic decisive indicator of a POA and it should show good contrast between the dark and light areas. All horses and ponies can show white around the eye if it is rolled back, up and down, or if the eyelid is lifted. The POA sclera is white and usually readily visible when the eye is in a normal, relaxed position.

POA has 4 gaits. The walk is straight with a long, easy stride that is true and flat footed. The Western Jog Trot is soft, relaxed, and quiet with a definite two beat gait. The English Trot is a free-moving stride, executed in a long, low frame with no excessive knee or hock action. The Lope or Canter is rolling and comfortable with a natural three beat pattern.

Since Appaloosa and Quarter Horse have been used in the development of the POA, Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) is a possible genetic defect that could occur. HYPP is inherited as a dominant trait and is characterized by intermittent seizures of uncontrolled muscle tremors (shaking, trembling or twitching) or profound muscle weakness, and in severe cases, may lead to collapse and/or death. To date, HYPP has been traced only to descendants of a Quarter horse named IMPRESSIVE, #0767246. Additionally, with the POA having Appaloosa in their ancestry, it is important to be aware that Appaloosas have a highest risk of any breed of developing spontaneous Equine Recurrent Uveitis (ERU) or "moon blindness", which can lead to blindness if not treated.

The POA is easy to train, senses what is required and readily obeys the demands of its handler and shows good manners in the ability to stand quietly, and back readily. Kids and POAs develop special bonds and these gentle child-size equines can give a child the confidence and the responsibility that will serve them well later on in life. Children cheer for each other even though they are competing against each other. . The gentle disposition, durability and intelligence of the Pony of the Americas serve it well.

The American Quarter Horse: Faster Than A Speeding Thoroughbred

The Quarter Horse is known as the All-American horse and as the world's most versatile horse. Not only is it the most popular breed in the United States, but it is possibly the oldest horse breed in the US. Named for its amazing speed during a short one quarter mile sprint, the fastest galloping speed by any horse has been achieved by the American Quarter Horse which has been clocked at speeds near 55 mph (88 km/h) in a quarter mile or less. Their immensely powerful hindquarters can propel the horse into a gallop almost from a standing start, and Quarter Horse racing is becoming more popular. The average Quarter Horse usually lives 20 years, but 35 years is not uncommon when properly cared for.

It has been called by many names over the years: American Quarter Horse, Foundation Quarter, Standard Quarter, Racing Quarter, Running Quarter, Quarter Miler, Short Horse and the cowboy's Cutting Horse.

While the breed originated in the United States and is now distributed worldwide, its ancestry dates back to the Arabian, Barb and Turk horses that were imported to America by early Spanish explorers, conquistadors and traders. These were combined into the Chickaswas breed by Native Americans to form one side of the bloodline, with English horses and Thoroughbreds on the other. Morgan and Standardbred horses have also been used in the breed's development. But it is difficult to give the exact origins because the blending of bloodlines to produce a short-distance horse started in colonial regions prior to the Revolutionary War. The true beginnings are believed to have been in the Carolinas and Virginia but the principle development was in the southwestern part of the United States, in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and Kansas when in the early 1600s, settlers began importing English horses and breeding them to the native Spanish-based Chickaswas stock to create a tough all-purpose horse.

Of course, naming horses after people was common practice back then and when the horses were sold their names were often changed. This led to confusion when attempting to verify pedigrees. Nowadays a horse's name must be acceptable to the American Quarter Horse Association and must not exceed 20 characters. Quarter Horse names may be reused only if certain criteria are met as per AQHA rules.

And no particular attention was made to keep them as a distinct breed, either. Fast horses were raced in any suitable open space with many races being run as "match races" after a private wager between owners or riders. Any of these fast horses that also made good cow horses were crossed to existing mares. Many of these mares had Spanish, Arabian, Morgan, or Standardbred backgrounds.

In 1889, Traveler, a horse of unknown pedigree, was shipped to Texas in a carload of horses but it is believed that he originated in Kentucky. Traveler was apparently not considered valuable and at least once changed hands in a craps game. He and his descendants were mated to some excellent mares, and many Quarter Horses today can trace back to him along the paternal side.

Currently there are two basic varieties of the breed. The Foundation Quarter, Standard Quarter or old-fashioned "Bulldog" type is the smallest, shortest, stockiest, most muscular variety, yet extremely agile and sure-footed. Used for ranch work, trail and pleasure riding, they average 14 to15 hands and weigh 900 to 1,100 lbs. The Racing Quarter, Running Quarter is taller, leaner and looks more like a well-muscled Thoroughbred due to the added Thoroughbred genes. These average between 15 to 16 hands, weigh 1,000 to 1,250 pounds and tend to be in solid colors with limited white markings.

American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the largest equine breed registry in the world, and founded in 1940, has registered more than 5 million American Quarter Horses with the current population estimated at 3.2 million animals.

The breed is usually recognized by a short muzzle, broad forehead with a straight profile and large jaws. It has small fox-like ears and large, wide-set eyes. The neck has a slight crest. Their backs are short with good withers and a sloping croup. The barrel is deep with well-sprung ribs and the hooves are well-rounded, with deep open heels. The following 13 colors are accepted by the AQHA: brown, chestnut, gray, dun, red dun, bay, buckskin, black, grullo, red roan, blue roan, and palomino, with sorrel being the most common and limited white markings.

The walk, trot, canter, and gallop are the Quarter Horse's natural gaits. Some individuals have long, leggy movements with a lot of knee action, while others take shorter steps.

As for disposition and personality, this horse is the most willing, laid-back, quiet and even-tempered of all the breeds, and has a gentle nature. They are quick and agile, level-headed and sensible, sure-footed and steady with good stamina. Their unflappable nature has made them suitable for mounted police units in cities. Intelligence, reliability, adaptability and willingness to please their owners make the Quarter Horse very easy to train in all ways. The breed seems to have an innate "cow sense" and can anticipate the moves made by cattle which makes them indispensable for herding and cutting.

There is one downside to the breed however, a genetic oddity known as Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP). This is listed as a genetic defect in AQHA's rules, along with Parrot Mouth and Cryptorchidism. HYPP is inherited as a dominant trait and is characterized by intermittent episodes of uncontrolled muscle tremors (shaking, trembling or twitching) or profound muscle weakness, and in severe cases, may lead to collapse and/or death. To date, HYPP has been traced only to descendants of a horse named IMPRESSIVE, #0767246.

They are indeed an all-purpose horse with uses ranging from racing, herding, and rodeo, to Show Jumping, dressage, carriage and pleasure riding.

What’s a Girl’s Best Friend, horses or Diamonds?

Some fashion magazines, writers and movies will tell you that diamonds are a girl’s best friend – but not in my case and here is why…

Hi, my name is Linda Shute from New Jersey, and here is why riding horses is one of my greatest passions in life…

As a child I think I was born with horses on my brain, they’ve always been in my life and very close to me in many ways.

Before I was old enough to drive I was very mobile because of my horses.

My uncle gave me my first pony Trotter, his color was chocolate palomino, he had no pedigree to speak of just your above average pony.

Trotter was very dear to me until I out grew him. He would perform under saddle or in harness. I started out riding western because it was the most popular where I live.

Sometimes I would ride bareback and jump over small obstacles in the yard.

Self made fences like two columns of a few baskets or boxes piled up with a broom across the top. Not much to look at, but creative enough for an eight year old kid and it served my purpose besides Trotter didn’t care what it looked like.

Mom wasn’t to happy a few times when we miscalculated and broke the broom handle then she had to go buy new broom to sweep the floor.

Trotter took me all over, sometimes I would ride him and we would go out roaming around for four or five hours we would travel ten or fifteen miles from home.

I would cut through farmers’ fields always careful to stay on the edge as not to harm their crops that were growing. My favorite ride in the summer was towards the small town of Swedesboro through the peach and apple orchards.

A diamond can’t take me to the orchards or share a piece of fruit with me.

As a small girl of eight or ten nothing was sweeter than a fresh apple or peach eaten on top of my pony. I would take a bite and give the rest to him, then pick another. I felt like the world was at my finger tips.

Trotter gave me freedom to explore the world he fed my sense of adventure.

Sometimes I didn’t feel like riding or a friend would go with me, since I didn’t want him carrying two us for that long I would hook him up to the cart and harness and drive him.

The only way a diamond can provide freedom is if you sell it for a high price and use the money to escape from something.

How can a diamond feed your sense of adventure? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I don’t like diamonds. They do have a big sparkle and look nice. They can also be very expensive

As I got older I out grew Trotter and sadly had to sell him for a bigger horse.

I still remember the person that bought Trotter coming to the house to pick him up. We loaded him into the back of his pick-up truck and Trotter was screaming (whinnying) and kicking he didn’t want to leave, my heart was being ripped out, yet I couldn’t keep two animals and I needed a bigger mount.

It was a hard lesson learned.

Horses also taught me responsibility because they needed to be fed and cared for everyday morning and night. Equipment and stables had to be taken care of and cleaned daily. Horses eat hay and we had farm land to raise hay. This meant harvesting. When I was in my teens sometimes I could be found driving the tractor raking the hay fields or using the baler, other times I may be on the wagon behind the baler stacking the hay for my horses. Then it would have to be transferred from the hay wagon into the barn.

Since then I have bought, sold and raised about fifteen horses. One of my favorites was Friday’s Anthem. As a girl of sixteen I won the “Rookie of the Year” award for the “Girls Rodeo Association” Eastern Chapter. One of my prizes was a free stud fee to a quarter horse stallion. I bred my mare and the colt was born on Good Friday. I named him Fridays’ Anthem. I trained him for English and Western Riding and showed him at local quarter horse shows I eventually sold him for $2500.

The horse shows taught me to strive to achieve more. Observe the competition and see what they are doing, what does the judge like, who is being pinned higher than we are. Train Your Horse different get him to perform different or better.

A diamond can’t teach you that.

I lived in the country and our nearest neighbor was about 3/4 of a mile away.

My relationship to my Horses was the same like that of a close friend.

They each have their own personalities and temperaments just like people.

They show their feelings in their eyes and ears. If they’re having a bad day when you go to the stable you may find a tail in the doorway instead of a face. When you enter the stall you may find ears laid back on the neck instead of pricked forward you learn to read their body language.

They have dreams just like we do. I remember this Standard bred race horse I was taking care of, a trotter named Noble Tryst. He was good enough to race in The Hamiltonian. He would take a nap every afternoon he would stretch out in his stall and sometimes have dreams. He looked like a big dog he would kick his feet and make noises. You don’t see this very often in horses. I never saw a diamond with a personality.

One day when I was working on the race track I was standing in front of this filly and yawned. Then the filly yawned, the one in the next stall yawned, and so it went down the length of the barn – just like people do.

When you’re riding or working a horse and ask for more they will give you their best and then some. How do you ask a diamond for more and receive it?

If you’re having a bad day you can wrap your arms around your horse's neck and hang on to something and they can turn their head toward you and wrap you into their neck like a hug. I’d like to see a diamond do that!

They’ll listen until you’re tired of talking or crying which ever the case may be.

Horses can be expensive, the initial cash outlay for the purchase and the ongoing upkeep. Now you can go out and buy a grade horse, buy that I mean your average run of the mill un-registered horse for around $500- $1000. But, if you want high quality pure bred stock with a pedigree you can be talking big bucks just like in diamonds

Horse Breeds - Thoroughbreds

Thoroughbreds are known as "America's Racing Horse". This breed of horse runs at the race track every single day around the world.

History of the Thoroughbred:

This breed of horse was originally bred in England due to the English horsemen's desire to have a fast race horse. There are three that founded this bloodline which are: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian, named after their respective owners, Thomas Darley, Lord Godolphin and Captain Robert Byerley. All of these stallions were imported to England from the Mediterranean Middle East between 1670 and 1710. The result was an animal that could carry weight with sustained speeds over extended distances. Approximately ninety percent of modern thoroughbreds have descended from Eclipse whose grandsire was Darley Arabian, who was never beaten in eighteen races.

This began a very selective breeding process which has been going on for nearly 250 years. Breeding the best stallions to the best mares to produce fast race horses, giving them superiority and excellence being established on the race track.

Around the turn of the 1700's, breeding records for Thoroughbreds were sparse and usually incomplete, and many times, they would not name a horse until the young horse had proven them self worthy. A gentleman named James Weatherby, through his own research and hard work and by the consolidation of his own privately kept pedigree records published the first volume of the General Stud Book. This was done in 1791. The first publication listed 387 mares, each of which could trace back to Eclipse. The General Studbook is still published in England by Weatherby and Sons, Secretaries to The English Jockey Club.

Many years later, as thoroughbred racing proliferated in North America the need for a pedigree registry for American Bred Thoroughbreds, similar to the General Stud Book became apparent. In 1873, the first American Stud Book was published by Colonel Sanders D. Bruce. This man spent almost a lifetime researching the pedigrees of American Thoroughbreds. He followed the pattern of the General Stud Book producing six volumes of the register until 1896 when the project was taken over by The Jockey Club. The integrity of the American Stud Book is the foundation on which all Thoroughbred racing in North America Depends.

The first publication of the American Stud Book by The Jockey Club had a foal crop of around 3,000. In 1986 in had grown to an astonish 51,000. Today The Jockey Club runs an elaborate new computer technology to meet the registration challenges posed by the gigantic number of annual registrations. The Jockey Club owns and operates one of the most sophisticated computer operations in the world today, with its database holding more than 1.8 million horses on a master pedigree file, with names that trace back to the 1800's. This is quite impressive genealogy. As well as bloodlines, this computer system also handles daily racing results of every Thoroughbred race in North America, as well as the ability to process electronically submitted pedigree and racing data from England, Ireland, France and other leading Thoroughbred countries.

Another descendant of Darley Arabian is Diomed; he won the first running of the Kentucky Derby in 1780. When he was twenty one years old he was brought to the United States where he produced the male line through his son, Sir Archie.

The most world renowned horse race is the Kentucky Derby, being the first race of the Triple Crown. The Preakness and The Belmont follow this historical racing event. Thoroughbreds are the horse of choice for track racing. Most thoroughbreds are born between January and April, but their official date of birth is January 1 of the current year. During their first year of growth, they are developing size and power with the youngster beginning his training as a yearling. The horse learns to accept a bridle and a saddle and soon after a rider on his back to break the horse and prepare him for the starting gate and the run around the track.

Horse Racing Wagers

From the moment that the first horse leaves the gate, until the very last one has crossed the Finish Line, a thoroughbred race is fun and exciting. Equally as exciting, is being able to wager on a winning horse. It is the stuff that dreams are truly made of.

Some people bet on hunches or just use pure luck. Perhaps a horse’s name is that of your great-uncle or sparks a childhood memory; those are the horses you have to bet on, no matter what the odds.

There are factors, however, that can and will determine the winner of a horse race. The horse’s overall health, its recent standings or turf condition at the track can all play a role in whether or not a horse will win. Serious handicappers may put big money on simple bets based on these factors, but most veterans will opt for intermediate or advanced betting, using exactas, quinellas and superfectas. The following, is a guide to the different types of bets offered at a horse race. Once you learn how some of the following bets work, who knows? You could be wagering along side the very best and it may just pay off.

Simple Bets

Win -- This is the easiest and most common bet to make. When you put money on a horse to win, the horse must come in first in order for you to collect a prize. The money you collect will be based on the odds issued for Your Horse at post time.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put $1 to win on a horse #7, you would collect $4.50.

Place – Another easy, common bet, putting money on a horse to place will result in a win if your horse comes in either first or second. Remember if your horse comes in first, you will only collect on the place payout.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put $2 to place on a horse #7, you would collect $5.00. If you put $1 to place on a horse #2, you would collect $2.00.

Show – Like win and place bets, show is an easy and safe bet, but often yields a low payout. Putting money on a horse to show will result in a winning ticket if your horse comes in either first, second or third. Again, if your horse comes in first or second, you will only collect on the show payout.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put $1 to show on a horse #2, you would collect $1.50. If you put $2 to show on a horse #4, you would collect $3.40.

Combination (win, place and/or show): It is always fun to play a combination of win, place and show bets. While these bets will yield a higher payout, they will often cost more money.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put $2 to win and place on horse #7 (the cost of the bet would be $4 or $2 per post), you would collect $14 ($9 + $5). If you put $6 to win, place and show on a horse #2 (the cost of the bet would be $18 or $6 per post), you would collect $21 ($4(3) + $3(3)).

Intermediate Bets

Exacta (also called a Perfecta) – When playing an exacta, you bet on which horses will come in first and second in a particular race. This, of course, is riskier than a straight bet because if your horses do not finish first and second, in the order you chose, you lose the bet. For example, if you play and exacta #7, #5 and the #5 horse wins and the #7 comes in second, you lose the bet. A good way to test the waters with an exacta is to pair it up with a straight bet. Here’s an example:

If you put $2 to win and place on horse #7 (the cost of the bet would be $4 or $2 per post), you would collect $14 ($9 + $5). If you played a $2 exacta (total bet cost $2) on #7 and #2, you would collect $36.40, for a total of $50.40. The total cost of your bet was $6.

By pairing up the exacta with a straight bet, your odds of winning are higher. You may have faith enough to put $2 on the #7 to win and place, but you may not be as confident about the #2 horse. Pair it up in an exacta and the result could pay off.

Quinella – When playing a quinella, like the exacta, you bet on which horses will come in first and second in a particular race. However, it does not matter which of your two horses finishes first. This is a safer bet than the straight exacta, but costs more money.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

Exacta pays: 36.40

If you put a $2 quinella on the #2 and #7 (the cost of the bet would be $4), you would collect $36.40 regardless of whether the #7 or #2 came in first, as long as they both finish in the top two.

Quinella Box (Exacta Box or Perfecta Box) – With this bet you can also play more than two horses. As long as any of your horses finish first and second in a particular race, you win the bet. However, the more horses you play, the more expensive the bet. For example, A $2 box of three horses would be (3 x 2 x 2) = $12. A $2 box of four horses would be (4 x 3 x 2) = $24.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put a $1 quinella box on the #2, #7, #4 and #11, you would collect $18.20, but the cost of your wager would have been $12. So, the more horses you add, the payoff may not be as great.

Quinella (Exacta or Perfecta) Wheel or Key – The quinella wheel is similar to the quinella box except when you are playing a quinella wheel, you must determine certain post finishes, usually win or place. These bets are riskier than the quinella box wager, but are often less costly.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

Exacta pays: 36.40

If you played a $2 quinella wheel with #7 on top with the #2, #4 and #11, you would collect $36.40 (the cost of the wager would have been $6). However, the #7 horse had to finish fist in order to win the quinella.

Trifecta (also called a Tricast) – A trifecta is similar to an exacta except that you bet on which horses will come in first, second and third in a particular race. For example, if you play a trifecta #7, #5, #4 and the #5 horse comes in fourth, you lose the bet.

Trifecta (Tricast) Box – Like the quinella, if all three of horses finish in the top three, in any order, you win. Also similar to the quinella box, you can play as many horses as you wish.

Trifecta (Tricast) Wheel or Key – The trifecta wheel is similar to the trifecta box except when you are playing a trifecta wheel, you must determine certain post finishes, usually win. These bets are riskier than the trifecta box wager, but are often less costly.

Sample bet: Once the race has ended, the track’s tote board will display the value of winning tickets relative to a $2 wager. For example the board may look like this:

If you put a $2 trifecta wheel with #2 on top with the #7and #4, the cost of the wager would have been $4). However, you would have lost the bet because #2 did not finish first.

Advanced Bets

Superfecta – The superfecta is played by picking the first four horses to finish in exact order. Superfecta boxes, key and wheels may also be available for the superfecta.

The Daily Double – Allows you to wager on the winners of two consecutive races.

Pick 3 or Triple Sweep – Allows you to wager on the winners of three consecutive races.

Pick 6 – Allows you to wager on the winners of six consecutive races.

The Daily Double – Allows you to wager on the winners of two consecutive races.

There are many different ways to wager on a horse race and many ways to maximize your earnings. If you’re a novice, start with some simple bets before moving onto our suggested intermediate bets and, of course, don’t try any advanced bets unless you are confident that you know what you are doing. As with any sports betting, there is never a “sure thing” in a horse race, so bet wisely.

Be aware that the above referenced terms vary from track to track, country to country and among gambling and fantasy websites. Some have minimum wagers as low as .10 and as high as $2. Be sure to read the rules at your particular venue before placing a bet.

What is the Cost of Horse Breeding?

I do not know what inspired me, but as a young teenager I was quite determined to have a foal. I had a mare and all I had to do was find a stallion and my wish would come true. The sad fact is that no one around me knew any better. Horse breeding costs, in time, in money, in care, there is always a cost involved.

I found two farms in our area that had stallions and both were willing to attempt a cover for free. It would cost me nothing or so I thought. I took my mare to stay with a stallion in his pasture for a couple of weeks hoping that nature would take care of itself. My mare never became pregnant and lost a riding horse for that time.

Young as I was, I just took things in stride, but now that I know better I am quite frustrated with the facts. Had I have known anything about breeding horses I would of at least spent money to have a veterinarian come and inspect my mare. That way we would have known when she was in season.

If you want to breed you really need to spend money. Your mare needs to be in season that means that her reproductive cycle is at the stage where she is most likely to conceive. You can, if you know what the signs are, watch and chart your mare's cycle to know when to take her to the stallion.

On the other hand if you do not have the knowledge you should have your veterinarian palpate your mare. He will examine her and tell you exactly the day, sometimes the time (morning or afternoon) that she is most receptive. It is money well spent.

The stallion fee is usually the largest sum of money you will part with for breeding. Stallion fees are based upon several factors such as breed, performance and bloodlines.

Bloodlines contain genetic history, who the father (sire) and dam (mother) were and their parents, much like our own family tree. A bloodline is preferred when on both the sire and dam's side there are horses that have performed and excelled in a discipline.

Stallion fees are usually paid upfront; it is to your advantage to select a stud that offers live foal guarantees. That way if your mare aborts or if the first cover is not successful, you can take your mare back for another cover at no extra cost.

A good horse breeder will have the veterinarian do several visits to the mare to ensure her health and that of the foal. The cost in my opinion is worth it, for example when a veterinarian detects twins during an examination he will be able to remedy the situation which will better your chances of having a live foal.

When cost is not a concern you could choose to stable your mare at the stud and have the trained staff take on the responsibility. They will keep a record of your mare charting her cycle, veterinarian visits, coverings and care. Once your mare is in foal you would arrange to collect her and take her home.

Basic costs of horse breeding include the stallion fee and veterinarian exams for the mare. Other costs to consider are transportation, boarding and veterinarian visits during the pregnancy and after. Once the foal is born you have the cost of his care as well as your mare.
